Sueno’s Stone: Scotland’s Tallest Pictish Wonder
Standing proudly on the eastern edge of Forres, Sueno’s Stone is a true titan of early medieval Europe. Carved from a single, massive slab of red sandstone between the mid-800s and early 900s, this staggering monument tower rises over 6.5 meters (21 feet) high. Encased in a modern glass structure to shield its delicate reliefs from the elements, the stone is globally celebrated for its unparalleled, deeply mysterious carvings that depict a massive, brutal ancient conflict.
The Majestic Christian Cross
The side of the monolith facing roughly west is dominated by a beautifully executed, high-relief Christian cross decorated with intricate, woven Celtic knotwork. Just beneath the base of the cross stands an incredibly rare, enigmatic carving interpreted by many leading historians as a royal inauguration or enthronement ceremony. It suggests the stone wasn't just built to look impressive, but to celebrate a monumental moment of royal power in ancient Scotland.

The reverse side of the stone tells a completely different, violent story. Divided into four detailed narrative panels, it functions exactly like a 10th-century comic strip of a massive battle. From top to bottom, it depicts wealthy lords on horseback arriving for war, intense hand-to-hand infantry combat on foot, an army retreating, and a heavily fortified structure or archway surrounded by piles of headless bodies and severed heads.

🚗 How to Find Sueno’s Stone
Take the A96 westward out of Elgin heading towards Forres/Inverness.
As you approach the outskirts of Forres, take the exit at the roundabout onto the B9011 (signposted for Forres).
Continue onto Victoria Road, then make an immediate right turn onto Findhorn Road.
Follow the road for just a moment into the quiet residential corner; you will see the massive 6.5-meter glass pavilion enclosing the stone standing right on your left.
