Roseisle Beach is a stunning, multi-mile stretch of golden sand located on the Moray Coast of Scotland, tucked between the coastal villages of Findhorn and Burghead. It is widely celebrated for its unique pairing with the adjacent Roseisle Forest, an expansive pine woodland planted in the 1930s that runs parallel to the shore and provides excellent shelter on windier days. Managed by Forestry and Land Scotland, it operates as a country park and serves as a highly popular destination for wildlife tracking, family days out, and coastal hiking.
The Line of Defence
Walking along the shoreline today, the most striking sight is the endless row of massive, weathered concrete blocks resting on the sand. Built during the height of the Second World War, these anti-tank obstacles were cast on-site to defend the soft, sandy bays of the Moray Firth from a feared seaborne Nazi invasion.
Guardians of the Dunes
Tucked away into the marram grass and the edge of the pine woods lie several surviving concrete pillboxes. These fortified structures were strategically placed to provide interlocking fields of machine-gun fire across the beach. Alongside them, an extensive network of practice trenches was dug into the forest floor, where thousands of Allied troops trained intensely before taking part in the D-Day landings.
The Secret Beach Decoys
Roseisle played a vital, hidden role in protecting the nearby RAF airfields of Kinloss and Lossiemouth. The beach was utilized as an official "Q-type" and "QF" airfield decoy site. Elite teams constructed elaborate dummy structures and simulated runway lighting arrays. At night, they intentionally ignited controlled fires to trick enemy German bombers into believing the airfield had already been hit, successfully coaxing them into dropping their payloads onto the empty sands instead of the critical military bases nearby.

🚗 How to Get to Roseisle Country Park
Location: Located on the Moray Coast, right between Burghead and Findhorn.
By Car: From Elgin, take the A96 west towards Forres, then turn right onto the B9013 following the clear brown tourist signs for Roseisle Country Park.
Parking & Amenities: There is a fantastic, spacious forest car park managed by Forestry and Land Scotland (parking charges apply). The site features excellent public toilets, outdoor showers for swimmers, and brilliant picnic areas right by the edge of the trees.
